About the Item

This vintage example was woven in the 1980s, which marks the beginning of the revivalist period of Tibetan weaving, which took place in Nepal through small co-operatives of Tibetan refugees who had escaped their native country following the Cultural Revolution. The pattern here is taken from the iconography of the traditional Tibetan khamdrum, which are small format sitting rugs embellished by roundels taken from the iconography of Chinese silk brocades of the Ming period, and framed by a Greek-fret border. The pattern is characteristically spare, which becomes even more effective in larger formats like on this example, where the gold coloured pattern is highlighted by the contrast with the mocha brown background. The use of naturally-dyed hand-spun wool contributes greatly in re-enacting the same feeling of the original antique.
