Hand-knotted in wool, an antique 9x16 Indian rug circa 1920-1930
On the Design:
This is a very rare piece, both in its beauty and its design. Possibly a jail rug, with a style much like Khotan Samarkand rugs and an English sensibility in its design.
Keen eyes will note that the rich burgundy field and gold border underscore floral patterns and pictorials in jewel tones—particularly representations of birds and other mythical creatures resembling phoenixes and dragons.
Condition:
The rug thrives in great condition for its age and origin - notably one-of-a-kind for a pictorial of its size and quality.
