About the Item
The weaving of flat-woven cotton carpets known as dhurries is cited in Mughal chronicles of the 15th century. Probably one of the earliest forms of floor covering, dhurries were woven in various formats according to their function, which range from bed covers to prayer mats. Most were produced in the northern region of Rajasthan, almost always in the local jails. These were often commissioned for specific areas of the Maharaja's palaces and are often of massive dimensions.
This sweet example is distinguished by a chromatic juxtaposition of two shades of indigo blue. In the central section the pattern consists of denim blue horizontal cartouches laid over a light blue background. The end panels are defined instead by the direct contrast of light blue and dark blue stripes. Each stripe and cartouche is flanked by a pair of very fine golden yellow stripes. This results in a truly elegant and well balanced composition, which is best expressed by its rare medium format.
