About the Item
Amritsar had the reputation of being a very prestigious weaving centre during the Mughal Empire. Its 19th century production is characterised by pastel shades, large-scale patterns and by a soft and silky wool of the pashmina type. Together with Agras, Amritsar carpets were commissioned by the British nobility during the colonial period to decorate their castles and manors and represent one of the most desirable carpets in today's interior decoration. Our example is distinguished by a well-spaced all-over pattern of stylized leafs called 'herati' orchestrated by a refined choice of palette of ivory and antique rose, made possible by the high quality of the materials employed as well as the excellent preservation.
