Vintage 1940s Indian Cotton Double-Sided Runner

A striking example of mid-20th century Indian textile craftsmanship, this vintage cotton runner from the 1940s showcases a rare and highly symbolic design, rooted in Islamic art and architecture. The rug is composed of ten repeated mihrab (prayer niche) motifs, each framed by a pointed arch and filled with intricate geometric diamond-and-dot patterns. These motifs are clearly segmented by vertical bands, reinforcing their individual presence while contributing to the visual rhythm of the whole runner.
Woven in a reversible flatweave technique, the rug is entirely double-sided, offering versatility and longevity. One side presents a vivid indigo-blue ground with white lattice patterns, while the reverse inverts the palette, creating a striking white ground with blue motifs.
