About the Item
The weaving of flat-woven cotton carpets known as dhurries is cited in Mughal chronicles of the 15th century. Probably one of the earliest forms of floor covering, dhurries were woven in various formats according to their function, which range from bed covers to prayer mats. Most were woven in the northern region of Rajasthan, almost always in the local jails. These were often commissioned for specific areas of the Maharaja's palaces.
This extremely finely woven example has a pattern taken from 17th century pile carpets woven for the Mughal court. The field is composed of an infinite repeat of polychrome diamonds containing a variety of botanical motifs found on the fine rugs of the Mughal period knotted with pashmina pile. The refined burgundy ground border is characteristic of a very rare group of early Mughal weavings, and consists of a graceful green vine motif from which sprout polychrome blossoms.
