Navajo Rug with Spider Woman Cross and Whirling Logs, 1900

About the Item

Beautiful antique J.B. Moore of Two Grey Hills Navajo wool rug with Spider Woman and Whirling Logs motives, circa 1900. This rug's look and soft hand-feel make would make it a fantastic addition either on floor or wall for a modern or cabin-like installation. It measures 60" wide on outer edge (55" in center), 84" length. (This is hand-loomed and Hand Carded Wool, so variations in width are to be expected). Professionally hand washed. All natural colors, no dyes were used. Provenance: The rug came from a local Bay Area estate, having been purchased circa 1900-1910 at the Two Grey Hills New Mexico Trading Post, used as wall display and then stored in a 19th century Biscuit tin. Prior to 1900, old Navajo wearing blankets often carried symbols or motifs that were attached to the teachings of Spider Woman. Perhaps the symbol or motif that dominated those early blankets was the cross. Many a Navajo grandmother will tell you that crosses represent Spider Woman. The symbol of Spider Woman was given to the earliest weavers to remember her teachings and wisdom. For some weavers, placing the symbol of Spider Woman (crosses) within a graphic form of a diamond, triangle or square was risky business. Spider Woman was not of this world and her spirit should not be entrapped within the form. The Two Grey Hill's rug became known for it's all natural wool colors blended to various shades of tan, grey, brown, black and white. The brown sheep are particularly rare and their colors cannot be achieved with synthetic dye. The subtle shades of wool fleece, along with the excellent spinning and weaving skills make the true Two Grey Hills rug impossible to duplicate. The other distinction was the weavers carded and spun the wool to a fineness rarely found in the other regional styles. The Two Grey Hills style rugs and tapestries are one of the best known, most sought after and expensive patterns, a fact still true today.
