This 11x18 antique Agra rug is an extremely rare and exciting new addition to Rug Kilim’s collection of Indian rugs—made with hand-knotted wool and believed to originate from India circa 1890-1900. On the Design Designers and admirers of the craft alike will particularly appreciate its size—one of the best and most versatile one can find turn-of-the-century Agra rugs, and well-suited to so many special spaces today. Our Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal calls this a particular finer weave and more beautiful drawing that admirers of the craft will appreciate among works of this provenance, especially for the scale and large-size which are equally sought-after by curators and designers today. Collectors of colonial Indian carpets will immediately appreciate this refined Agra specimen, where British sensibilities merge seamlessly with Indo-Persian artistry. Rich burgundy red, cream and light green hues underscore the border, where field exhibits an extraordinarily sophisticated take on the all-over Herati floral pattern, rendered with remarkable restraint against cream, pink and champagne tones of a delightful, feminine sensibility. Keen eyes will further admire the deft hand behind such finely drawn patterns in a piece of this scale, and the overall balance of an elegant, yet comfortable mood—very likely the work of an Indian master weaver or loom.
