Kilim is directly inspired by the rich history of antique Chinese Art Deco rugs and similar Chinoiserie designs from the iconic movement of the same name in the 1920s.
On the Design:
This piece functions as a vibrant tapestry for the floor, capturing the spirit of the Jazz Age through its bold use of color and "floating" pictorial composition. The field is saturated in a rich, warm terracotta and rust red—hues that serve as a luminous stage for the whimsical garden scene of butterflies, vases and florals in bright, almost pastel-tone colors unfolding across the center. Unlike the rigid symmetry of traditional rug weaving, this design embraces the poetic asymmetry that defined the 1920s aesthetic, allowing the motifs to breathe within a vast "negative space."
A beautifully detailed planter anchors the lower corner, giving rise to sprawling branches heavy with oversized peonies and plum blossoms in shades of dusty rose, cream, and sky blue. A solitary butterfly hovers in the upper quadrant, introducing a light, airy sense of movement that feels both serene and lifelike. This cinematic arrangement is neatly framed by a triple-layer border: a thin inner pinstripe of deep burgundy, followed by a cool slate-blue guard, and finished with a wide, substantial outer frame in the primary terracotta.
