This 2x3 contemporary Dhurrie rug is an exciting new curation from Rug
Kilim’s latest acquisition of new flatweaves—handwoven in cotton in India.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will note this piece as an exemplar of contemporary interpretations of Indian Dhurrie flatweaves. This dhurrie presents a classical composition of geometric medallions in crisp ivory against a deep indigo ground. The central field, defined by a rectangular frame, contains two symmetrical snowflake-like motifs, while six matching medallions create a balanced arrangement around the border. Small cross elements punctuate the spaces between medallions, adding rhythmic detail to the design.
One of the many beauties that distinguishes this Dhurrie from other contemporary Indian rugs and flatweaves of the period is its particular minimalist style—an exemplary use of only two colors and repetitive patterns in an outstanding versatile size that achieves the quintessential look so sought after in this provenance. It’s a simple, yet sophisticated work of its kind that speaks to both traditional Indian textile arts and modernist design principles.
