About the Item
Hand-knotted in wool, this 3x4 rug is a new addition to the Burano Collection by Rug
Kilim and is inspired by turn-of-the-century antique Ghiordes rugs.
On the Design:
Particularly inspired by the spiritual geometry of antique Turkish prayer mats, this rug features the iconic arch (mihrab) motif that is central to prayer rug design. The aesthetic embraces the primitivist, old-world geometric patterns and softened colors typical of the Ghiordes region.
The design focuses on a centralized, highly abstracted Tree of Life motif, rising beneath the distinctive stepped arch. Rendered in muted gold and gray tones against a light field, the tree symbolizes eternity and connection, lending the rug a serene, sacred presence.
This central pictorial panel is beautifully contained by a complex, multi-layered border system: an inner guard band of tribal blue/gray geometry gives way to a dominant, vibrant outer frame of brick red and small latch-hook patterns. These warm and rich colors together capture the look of personal, craft-oriented beauty that distinguishes nomadic textiles. It’s an intentional contribution to a classic for a more contemporary level of comfort, and one of the many beauties that makes the Burano Collection a sophisticated, smart new language in design.
