About the Item

Hand-knotted in wool, this 4x4 rug is a new addition to the Burano Collection by Rug Kilim and is inspired by turn-of-the-century antique Ghiordes rugs. On the Design: This rug is a masterful textile tribute to the solemnity and grace of antique nomadic prayer weaving. It features the iconic arch (mihrab) motif that is central to prayer rug design. The aesthetic embraces the primitivist, old-world geometric patterns and richly saturated colors typical of this revered weaving tradition. The design focuses on the deeply saturated, brick red field beneath the arch, which is enlivened by a scattered array of small geometric markings—creating a beautiful, textural atmosphere rather than a single pictorial motif. The mihrab arch itself is framed by a clear line of sky blue and defined by bold, tribal stepped patterns in the spandrels above, incorporating mustard yellow and muted beige scrolls. This central devotional panel is beautifully contained by a complex, multi-layered border system: a dominant inner frame of rich brick red and small latch-hook patterns gives way to outer guard bands featuring dense rows of geometric diamonds and stylized foliage. These warm and rich colors together capture the look of personal, craft-oriented beauty that distinguishes nomadic textiles. It’s an intentional contribution to a classic for a more contemporary level of comfort, and one of the many beauties that makes the Burano Collection a sophisticated, smart new language in design.
