On the Design:
This custom rug sample represents a carefully extracted corner section from a traditional Khotan rug design, focusing on the intersection of border and field elements. The primary design component features a stepped corner medallion with precisely articulated geometric forms including triangular and rectangular elements arranged in a sequence that would typically frame the central field. The left vertical border contains characteristic reciprocal arrow or diagonal mark motifs that appear in many Oriental, especially Chinese, weaving traditions. The colorway employs a warm and light palette dominated by pale chartreuse ground with charcoal outline work delineating the geometric elements. Small saffron accents appear selectively within certain motifs, and a luxe gold tone is among the most present of those at play. Admirers of the craft may further appreciate the emphasis on Buddhist imagery in Khotan rug designs like those that inspired this piece—most present in its choice of a cloudband and fretwork border, as well as the stylized spandrels and large-scale medallions of fortune previewed in this piece.
