Handwoven in a wool flatweave, this custom rug sample is an exciting addition to the Rug
Kilim’s Scandinavian rug collection—a contemporary reimagining of Swedish minimalism and vintage rugs and textiles of Rollakan and Rya traditions.
On the design:
This custom rug sample features a series of delicate horizontal stripes in varying widths and subtle tonal variations across a pale neutral ground, creating a gentle visual rhythm without bold contrast. A distinctive vertical band in deeper browns runs along the left edge, providing structural definition and subtle asymmetry that reflects modernist Scandinavian design principles. This new flat weave reinvents vintage Scandinavian Kilim in ways that both honor the Swedish minimalist aesthetic and modernize its construction. Our use of undyed natural yarns, for example, lends a subtle striae with more of a sense of movement and depth—a nod to Rollakan techniques in a modern fashion. This subtle intricacy both brings out the movement and pays homage to a traditional Scandinavian weaving technique alike.
Our flatweave’s more durable, weighted body is also a hallmark of the collection, made for high-traffic and heavy-furniture spaces. This, alongside several elements detailed here, represent R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s hope to honor this mid-century modern aesthetic. His Scandinavian Collection is a contribution to that style, and a renaissance for its designs with more comfortable, current techniques.
