Handwoven in a wool flatweave, this custom rug sample is an exciting addition to the Rug
Kilim’s Scandinavian rug collection—a contemporary reimagining of Swedish minimalism and vintage rugs and textiles of Rollakan and Rya traditions.
On the design:
This custom rug sample features a carefully structured grid design featuring vertical and horizontal bands that create rectangular compartments of varying sizes, arranged in an asymmetrical pattern that maintains visual balance without rigid symmetry. The intersections of bands create rhythmic transitions between color blocks, with selective areas of textural contrast at joining points. The colorway demonstrates remarkable restraint with a palette limited to warm earth tones—chocolate brown, camel, taupe, and ivory—creating subtle depth through tonal relationships rather than high contrast. This new flat weave reinvents vintage Scandinavian Kilim in ways that both honor the Swedish minimalist aesthetic and modernize its construction. Our use of undyed natural yarns, for example, lends a subtle striae with more of a sense of movement and depth—a nod to Rollakan techniques in a modern fashion. This subtle intricacy both brings out the movement and pays homage to a traditional Scandinavian weaving technique alike.
Connoisseurs may admire this proprietary technique of ours that both innovates and honors mid-century weaving techniques inherent to Scandinavian style. Our flatweave’s more durable, weighted body is also a hallmark of the collection, made for high-traffic and heavy-furniture spaces. This, alongside several elements detailed here, represent R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s hope to honor this mid-century modern aesthetic. His Scandinavian Collection is a contribution to that style, and a renaissance for its designs with more comfortable, current techniques.
