Handwoven in a wool flatweave, this custom rug sample is an exciting addition to the Rug
Kilim’s Scandinavian rug collection—a contemporary reimagining of Swedish minimalism and vintage rugs and textiles of Rollakan and Rya traditions.
On the design:
The custom rug sample features consistent horizontal striping with alternating bands of equal width creating visual rhythm across the entire surface. The stripes feature textural differentiation between sections, with varied weaving techniques creating subtle dimensional contrast between the bands. The colorway exhibits refined restraint with a palette limited to warm sienna-brown and natural beige tones, creating gentle harmony while maintaining clear definition between the alternating elements. This new flat weave reinvents vintage Scandinavian Kilim in ways that both honor the Swedish minimalist aesthetic and modernize its construction. Our use of undyed natural yarns, for example, lends a subtle striae with more of a sense of movement and depth—a nod to Rollakan techniques in a modern fashion. This subtle intricacy both brings out the movement and pays homage to a traditional Scandinavian weaving technique alike.
Connoisseurs may admire this proprietary technique of ours that both innovates and honors mid-century weaving techniques inherent to Scandinavian style. Our flatweave’s more durable, weighted body is also a hallmark of the collection, made for high-traffic and heavy-furniture spaces. This, alongside several elements detailed here, represent R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s hope to honor this mid-century modern aesthetic. His Scandinavian Collection is a contribution to that style, and a renaissance for its designs with more comfortable, current techniques.
