About the Item
A vintage Indian Cotton Agra carpet. Most cotton Agras from northern India are softly toned, but this unusual example has a rich palette of black, sand, and sky blue, with a strong centralized design featuring palmettes, large serrated lancet leaves and radiating bud circles. The central black border shows hexagons, fringed simple palmettes, and small flowers. What makes this carpet even more of an oddity is that it is actually made up of both wool and cotton. Cotton Agras are generally 100% cotton, but that isn't the case here which gives off the impression that this was a specially commissioned piece for an affluent western client. A well-woven, unusual city carpet needing bold, overscaled furnishings.
