About the Item

A gorgeous rendition and interpretation of the work of early 20th century Russian avant garde artist Wassily Kandinsky. This contemporary abstract tapestry weaving is hand embroidered using a chain stitch needlepoint method. The design is clearly inspired by Kandinsky and incorporates star fragments, enigmatic hieroglyphs and geometric forms presented in a variety of bold as well as muted colors. The work could be enjoyed as a rug on your floor or as a weaving on your wall - even as a throw over a chair! The work is done in silk and is backed in cotton. This is a contemporary piece of art that hails from Kashmir. I wanted to learn a bit more about the region and the weaving, and can offer you this tidbit from the Atlas Obscura website: "It was Zain-Ul-Abidin who introduced the art of weaving to Kashmir. The benevolent king, who had ruled the Kashmir Valley in the latter part of 15th century, had imported the art from Persia, which was Asia’s capital of high art at the time. The Craft flourished during the time of the Mughals and continued even during the troubled times of the Afghan and Sikh rules. The British arrived in the early part of the 19th century along with a certain utilitarianism and commercialization. Kashmiri shawls and carpets became known as cashmere in Britain. Easy to pack and transport, these luxurious squares of fabric were considered fashion statements as they were much more expensive than the regular silk and cotton fabrics. The British opened factories in Kashmir and production started commercially. For Kashmiri weavers, this meant turning their skills into generations of income. To this day, Kashmir carpets and shawls still follow the centuries-old tradition of intricate geometric and calligraphic motifs established by the earliest practitioners. The Craft’s beauty lies in that detailed needlework." Fascinating stuff to be sure. And this work on offer embodies all that their centuries of tradition have come to thus far. While I don't see any pulls or issues, there may be some age appropriate wear. Otherwise it's ready for display in your home.
