About the Item
Haik flat-woven covers were considered prestige items among the Berber women of the Moroccan High Atlas and Anti Atlas region, who employed them as ceremonial shawls. These are very finely woven in wool with details in cotton, and are often embellished by touches of Henna dye for apotropaic purposes. Antique haiks such as this example are collected as rare items of tribal art, used as hangings or covers but also as rugs in areas with very little foot traffic.
