Impressive vintage Tuareg mat handmade in the 1970s in Mauritania from natural materials--rush and leather--according to the ancient techniques of the nomadic peoples of the Sahara. This rare specimen, generously sized (318 x 277 cm), combines tribal aesthetics, functionality and historical value.
Originally used as interior flooring in desert tents, it protected against heat and sand due to its sturdy yet flexible structure. The regular interweaving of the rush strips, combined with the geometric patterns engraved in the leather, expresses the spiritual and symbolic identity of the Tuareg culture.
Elegant in its essentiality, this mat integrates perfectly into contemporary, ethnic or wabi-sabi style environments. In good vintage condition, not restored. Unique piece selected by Afolki, a specialist in authentic Berber rugs and mats. Guaranteed provenance.
