Impressive vintage Tuareg mat handmade in Mauritania in the 1970s by the nomadic tribes of the Sahara. This rare specimen (535 x 270 cm) is composed of thin strips of reed woven and sewn with strips of natural leather, according to a millennia-old craft tradition.
Originally used as flooring in nomadic tents, Tuareg mats offered protection from heat and sand, integrating function and symbolic meaning. The geometric patterns engraved in the leather tell of the spirituality and tribal identity of the Tuareg people.
With its textural texture, minimalist design, and great visual presence, this mat is ideal for contemporary, ethnic, or wabi-sabi settings. In good vintage condition, not restored.
