This vintage Tuareg mat, handmade in the 1980s in the heart of the Sahara, is a rare example of nomadic craftsmanship originating in Mauritania. Woven with reed strips and sewn with strips of natural goatskin, it was traditionally used to line the floor of tents, providing insulation from sand and heat in the desert.
Characterized by essential geometric patterns and a warm, earthy palette, this mat is much more than a decorative object: it is a cultural testimony rich in symbolism and primitive beauty. Each mat is unique, knotted according to orally handed down techniques, and bears the authentic signs of time-slight discolorations, wear and tear, and irregularities-that reinforce its historical value and wabi-sabi aesthetic.
Ideal as a floor mat, wall installation or statement piece for contemporary interiors, this mat was carefully selected by Afolki and imported to Italy with attention to authenticity and ethical sourcing.
