About the Item
Rare vintage Tuareg mat from Mauritania, handmade in the 1980s according to an age-old handicraft tradition of the nomadic people of the Sahara. This 345 x 180 cm specimen is composed of thin strips of natural wood, skillfully joined and decorated with leather inserts.
These mats were originally used as flooring inside tents to protect against the heat and sand of the desert. The geometric patterns imprinted in the leather have a strong symbolic and spiritual value, peculiar to Tuareg culture.
Perfect for refined interiors and rooms with ethnic, minimalist or wabi-sabi styles, this mat is lightweight, flexible and rollable, making it easy to place or display. In good vintage condition, not restored.
Provenance guaranteed by Afolki, a specialist in authentic Berber rugs and furnishings.
