This vintage rug and floor covering is a 9x14 Tuareg mat from the nomadic tribe of the same name. Handwoven with reeds and camel leather in Mauritania circa 1950-1960, its natural materials enjoy beige-brown, black and cream tones in its geometric patterns.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will especially appreciate Tuareg mats as distinct works with their own rich history and unique, masterful craftsmanship. This design is also one of few in its kind to favor a minimalist approach to the primitivist Berber geometric patterns, specifically tribal motifs in black, beige and brown. The field features three minimalist borders and a series of three tribal medallion patterns within the innermost border. The versatile scale further connotes a particularly intricate work—likely made by two or more weavers with meticulous detail. It’s as much a collectible piece of folk art and nomadic culture as a comfortable, durable floor covering today.
