About the Item
This vintage Tuareg mat, handmade in the Sahara between the 1950s and 1960s, is a fine example of nomadic craftsmanship from Mauritania. Woven with strips of palm wood and finished with strips of dromedary leather, the mat embodies the tradition and aesthetic essentiality of the Tuareg people.
Originally used as flooring inside tents to insulate against heat and desert sand, matting also served a cultural function. Its geometric patterns-crosses, lozenges and broken lines-bring with them symbolic meanings related to spirituality and tribal identity.
With its generous dimensions (471×225 cm), this piece lends itself perfectly to contemporary interiors, publishing spaces or covered terraces, imparting a sense of balance, authenticity and living matter.
In good vintage condition, with signs of time consistent with age and use. Unrestored.
