About the Item
This monumental vintage Tuareg mat was handmade in the Sahara in the 1980s by nomadic artisans from Mauritania. Composed of strips of palm wood interwoven with strips of natural leather, it is an authentic example of traditional Saharan craftsmanship. Originally used inside nomadic tents, these mats served to insulate from the ground and told tribal identity through coded geometric symbols.
With its large size (510×270 cm), this mat is a striking decorative piece, suitable as a rug, wall element or scenic wall covering in contemporary, boho or ethnic settings. The slight irregularities of the rush and the patina of the leather tell the story of time and use, lending character and authenticity.
In good vintage condition, with signs of wear consistent with age. No restorations or modifications are present.
