19th Century American Hooked Rug ( 3' x 5'5" - 90 x 165 )
This late 19th-century American hooked rug, circa 1880s, is a splendid example of American folk art. These rugs were a popular and creative outlet for women in New England and the Canadian Maritime provinces, who transformed recycled fabric scraps into functional, decorative pieces that brought warmth and beauty to their homes.
The rug features a bold, centrally oriented floral design, possibly inspired by the formal style of French Aubusson or European carpets, but executed with a charmingly individual, naive American sensibility. The main motif is a large red rose, flanked by white and blue flowers, surrounded by scrolling green and brown leaves and small red berries on a beige or tan ground. A deep green, ornate border with a scrolling leaf pattern frames the scene, enhancing its artistic appeal.
This piece was hand-hooked, a common technique in the late 19th century that involved pulling strips of fabric, often from discarded wool clothing, through a burlap backing using a simple hook tool.
