This striking circa 1910 Navajo rug is an exceptional example of early 20th-century weaving from the Navajo Nation, created during a highly influential era in Native American textile art. Woven entirely by hand on a traditional upright loom, the rug displays the hallmarks of masterful craftsmanship, using hand-spun wool and vegetal or aniline dyes that were common during the period. The design centers around two elongated interlocking diamond or lozenge motifs, bordered with stair-step “fence” forms—an innovative pattern that reflects the evolving artistic expression of Navajo weavers of the era. Surrounding the central motif is a dramatic field of serrated zigzags, executed in alternating shades of red, cream, brown, and black. These bold zigzags were emblematic of early regional styles influenced by both traditional Navajo symbolism and the growing trading-post aesthetic of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
