About the Item

This striking vintage Navajo rug (c. mid-20th century) is a classic “eye-dazzler” design, handwoven in soft wool with bold, graphic patterning. Four serrated diamond medallions march across the center field, each layered in ivory, black, red, tan and a touch of turquoise for that unmistakable Southwestern pop. This rug comes out of the classic “trading post” era of Navajo weaving, most likely from the mid-20th century (around the 1940s–1950s). After the late 1800s, Navajo weavers began shifting from wearing blankets to heavier rugs made specifically for the non-Native market. Traders across the Southwest—at places like Ganado, Crystal, and Two Grey Hills—encouraged bold geometric patterns and strong color contrasts that would appeal to buyers back East. Like other Navajo textiles, this rug would have been woven on a vertical, upright loom with no pattern drawn out—everything counted and balanced by eye and memory. Each diamond, zigzag, and stepped border is the result of meticulous handwork and generations of passed-down knowledge. Today, pieces like this are valued not just as décor, but as historic Native American artworks from an important period in Navajo weaving, when traditional techniques were adapted to create bold, modern-looking designs for a new market while still staying rooted in cultural tradition. The background is a heathered grey wool framed by powerful zigzag bands in red and tan, creating strong movement and rhythm throughout the piece. A stepped black-and-white border finishes the design, giving it a crisp, modern feel that works beautifully with both contemporary and rustic interiors. Perfect as a floor rug, wall hanging, or accent textile over a console or bed. Approximate size: 3'6" x 5'3"
