What a beautiful and unique Valentine's Day gift for that special someone! This beautifully made vintage Chéticamp hand hooked wool rug was crafted in the traditional method of rug hooking of the area dating back at least 150 years. Chéticamp is a rural community in Cape Breton Nova Scotia settled by French Acadians in the late 18th century after their expulsion by the British from the traditional land of the Mi'kmaq Peoples. Rug hooking in early colonial times was an industrious and creative use scrap wool and burlap from feed sacks to create much needed rugs for warmth on beds and floors during the northeast coastal winters. In the 1920s, the Washington-born artist Lilian Burke discovered these masterfully crafted rugs from the family of Alexander Graham Bell with whom she was aquainted. Lilian began selling these to Manhattan art lovers and opened the door to a lucrative cottage industry that enabled these minority women to earn money and support their families and community. This hooked wool rug on burlap is 34" X 17.25" with a cream background and a series of eighteen individual squares with mustard brown borders. Within each square is a floral pattern using hand dyed wool unique to the Chéticamp tradition. The muted shades of olive green, blue, yellow, and pink are also distinctive of the older style Chéticamp rugs. This rug is in fine condition and has been well-preserved over the years. It is perfect for adding a touch of history and elegance to any room in your home and tells a story of the industriousness, talent, tradition, and resilience of the French Acadian settlers of Chéticamp, Nova Scotia.
