Made with hand-knotted wool circa 1880-1890, this 7x10 antique Persian rug is a signed collectible and rare exemplar of the works of master weaver Aboul Ghasem Kermani—a historic name in Kerman Lavar rugs, both one of the most important workshops of the period and one of the most valuable signatures in all of Persian weaving.
On the Design:
This piece is an incredibly dense, elaborate all over pattern with a wide range of floral motifs and even more impressive variety of colors; a truly astonishing polychromatic palette being one of the hallmarks of Kermani’s work being his designs of impossibly meticulous detail, teeming with life and luxurious finesse. Among the floral patterns, there’s a particular emphasis of paisley motifs, which admirers of the craft will recognize as another testament to the sheer quality of this piece, as it was extremely difficult to repeat such a finely drawn, curvaceous piece like this in even finer scale. Keen eyes will note the weaver’s signature in the lower central border piece, flanked by equally rich and detailed floral scrolls and fine patterns as those of the field.
