About the Item
This distinctive vintage American hand-hooked rug, crafted in the early 1900s in New England, is a compelling example of early American folk-art textile tradition. Featuring a striking pair of stylized moths, the design evokes the graceful movement of birds in flight, creating a rhythmic and visually poetic composition that feels both symbolic and decorative.
Woven in a beautifully balanced palette of warm tan, soft ivory, and rich brown, the rug is enlivened by subtle green and red accent tones that add depth and visual interest without overpowering the composition. The motif is rendered with the charming irregularity and expressive simplicity that defines authentic antique hooked rugs, making this piece especially appealing to collectors and designers seeking textiles with soul and story.
American hooked rugs of this period were created as functional works of art—often designed by the maker and hooked by hand using wool strips pulled through a burlap or linen foundation. This technique gives each rug a painterly quality, with slight variations in color and texture that cannot be replicated in modern production.

Vintage American Hand Hooked Rug in Block Pattern
Located in Barrington, IL
Vintage American hand hooked area rug in a block pattern circa the early 20th century. The very unique and beautiful design in this vintage folk art hooked rug consists of a 5 x 7 block pattern each containing a different design. The design in this hand hooked rug is unique since the blocks around the perimeter of the rug are in a geometric pattern and the blocks in the center of the rug are in floral pattern. The design is set on a tan color background. The colors in each block are vibrant and make them stand out. Beautiful piece of Americana folk art to be used as a table top display or a wall art.
The hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are made with recycled old material, often used clothing that had been cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface. Once the design has been transferred to burlap, it would then be filled with the recycled material stripes and more recently yarn using the hooking technique. The use of special design and the brilliant colors makes this truly an artistic piece wonderful to be used as a wall art or displayed on a table. Antique Hooked Rugs are a combination of Folk Art Creativity and Simplicity.
