Although most Bijars are in Western room size proportions, this iconic example is in the long and relatively narrow gallery format characteristic of local, domestic patronage.
It was woven for the reception rooms of a local aristocrat, land owner, wealthy merchant or government official during the Qajar period in 19th century Persia. The dark blue ground with a powerful, angular split arabesque design organized around a palmette accented central axis is generally attributed to the town of Garrus (Gerous) near Bijar.
Arguing for the early period are the soft, terra cotta reds, the presence of aubergine, the multiple blues and, especially, the multi-layered design.
Flowers regularly pass beneath the strap-work arabesques and there are passages of three plane pattern: arabesques over arabesques and floral stems further beneath. This consistent layering is a feature of older, antique Bijars and tend to be lost in later examples.
The main border is in a rust/terra cotta ground tone, with a rosette and small palmette design resembling, at a remove, the “crab” pattern seen on Caucasian rugs. Usually, this type of Garrous Bijar shows a palmette, ribbon bow and cloud-band design, the unusual border is another feature indicative of age.
The best known close parallel is the silk warp, navy ground piece now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y., 4’6” x 14’3” The proportions and drawing are closely similar, but, if anything, our example has a more layered drawing. The museum piece is dated 1209 AH or 1794, but it has been altered from 1309 or 1882. Other examples in the gallery format are to be found in Newport, R.I..
Interestingly, the Garrus arabesque pattern seems to have no period of evolution. It has been posited that the design ultimately derives from Kerman “Vase” carpets, but no intermediates to complete the stemma are known. The pattern, both in drawing and palette seems to arrive fully developed by, at the latest, 1850. Our example should be one of the earlier ones. Only slightly later, the design was being copied, with modification, by Kurdish weavers near Hamadan. The pattern was preserved and transmitted by samplers(wagireh), but none are as old as this carpet.
The flora include carnations, irises, prunus, roses and other Persian garden flowers, all suitably abstracted. All the dyes are natural and include blues from indigo, reds from madder, yellow from vine leaves, green a composite of yellow and blue, brown from oak galls. The ivory wool is natural and un-dyed.
All in all, this is one of the oldest carpets from a very desirable group, in solidly floor-able condition.
