Antique Serapi Persian 1890s Rug, Country of Origin: Iran / Persia, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional example of a Serapi rug captures the distinctive aesthetic favored in Northwest Persia during the late Qajar period. Its commanding presence and robust weave exemplify the finest traditions of Iranian / Persian rugs from the mountainous region of Azerbaijan.
The field is dominated by a striking, angular medallion set against a rich, madder-red ground. Unlike the curvilinear designs of urban workshops, this piece features highly stylized, abstract forms and sharp lines characteristic of geometric rugs. The navy blue corners anchor the composition, providing a dramatic contrast to the warm terracotta tones of the main field.
Retaining excellent pile condition for its age, this piece functions perfectly as a foundational room-size rug, capable of defining a major living space or formal dining area.
