About the Item

Early 20th Century Persian Malayer Carpet ( 11' x 12'8" - 335 - 385 ) This antique Persian Malayer carpet, hand-knotted circa 1910, is a beautiful example of the fine village weaving traditions from the Hamadan province in Western Iran. It is recognized for its sophisticated balance between intricate Persian designs and geometric, tribal interpretations. The rug features a captivating and dense all-over pattern covering an abrashed (subtly varied) field, primarily in a soft blue or slate blue hue. This serves as a rich backdrop for a variety of stylized motifs, including angular floral forms, rosettes, and possibly the "boteh" (teardrop) or "Herati" (fish) patterns, which are common to the region. The use of multiple colors beyond just two or three shades makes the palette diverse and striking. The intricate field is contained within a prominent border system, featuring a wide inner band in a warm terracotta red or rust color, which provides a striking contrast and frames the composition beautifully. In line with traditional methods of the era, the rug was hand-knotted by individual weavers, likely women working from their homes, using locally sourced, lustrous, and durable wool. The weavers typically used natural vegetable dyes, which give the colors a richness and depth that ages gracefully over time. A key structural characteristic of many Malayer rugs is their single-weft construction and the use of the symmetrical Turkish knot, which results in a low-cut pile that enhances the clarity of the intricate designs. This meticulous craftsmanship contributes to the rug's durability, making it suitable for high-traffic areas.
