About the Item
19th Century N.W. Persian Bakhshaiesh Carpet ( 10'8" x 16'10" - 325 x 513 )
This is an antique Bakhsaiesh " Serapi " rug from 1880 Persia.
The colors are peach, pink, blue, cream, and red. There is a border and there are patterns all over it. There were minor repairs made to restore the authentic appearance of the rug.
This late 19th-century Persian Bakhshaiesh carpet, circa 1880s, is a highly desirable example of a Northwest Persian village rug. These pieces are renowned among collectors for their bold, geometric designs and unique, improvisational character, which reflect the individual artistry of the weavers.
Description
The carpet features a prominent, geometric central medallion set against a spacious, vibrant red field (often referred to as a "soft red" or "coral" hue). The medallion and corners (spandrels) incorporate striking navy blue tones, a color unique to the region often called "Bakshaish blue". The overall design adapts classical Persian motifs into a more abstract, dynamic form with oversized floral and arabesque elements and a distinct border pattern. The charm of these rugs lies in their playful asymmetry and the slight variations in motifs, ensuring each piece is a one-of-a-kind work of art.
Hand-knotted using durable, hand-spun wool from sheep in the Azerbaijan mountains, the carpet's robust structure and plush, yet tightly-woven, pile have contributed to its exceptional longevity. The rich and varied colors were achieved using natural vegetable dyes. Some Bakhshaiesh rugs from this era also incorporated undyed camel hair, giving certain areas a luminous golden or beige hue.
Prized for its ability to bridge traditional and contemporary aesthetics, this carpet's bold graphics and rich patina make it a versatile and eye-catching addition to a variety of interior designs. It's not just a floor covering but an art object, with many high-quality examples being museum pieces or fetching high prices at auction.
