About the Item
This rare 19th century Persian Bidjar rug exemplifies the mastery and durability for which Bidjar weavings are revered. The design centers on a bold medallion with a navy ground, adorned with geometric motifs in pale yellow, green, pink, blue, and brown, and accented by distinctive “Ram Horn” extensions in soft baby blue. Surrounding the medallion is a field of burgundy enriched with the classic Herati motif, where layers of stylized blossoms and latticework interlace in shades of pink, blue, green, yellow, brown, and cream.
The corner spandrels are rendered in abrash French blue, creating a dynamic contrast with the burgundy ground and lending depth and movement to the composition. A wide border in rich burgundy frames the piece, decorated with floral and geometric designs in complementary tones of blue, pink, yellow, and green.
Though its pile has worn low over the course of more than a century, the rug retains remarkable clarity of pattern and vibrancy of color.
