About the Item

This finely woven 19th Century Persian Shahsavan Soumak kilim is an exceptional example of nomadic craftsmanship, distinguished by its refined execution, harmonious design, and cultural authenticity. Created by Shahsavan tribal weavers of northwestern Persia, the piece reflects a high level of technical sophistication rarely found in surviving village textiles. Handwoven using very fine hand-spun wool and dyed exclusively with natural vegetable pigments, the textile is composed of two individually woven Soumak kilims that have been carefully joined, a traditional practice in the creation of larger tent textiles. Each section features a closely related composition, combining elegant striped fields with a Kufic-inspired geometric pattern, creating visual continuity and architectural balance. The restrained yet powerful palette of red, ivory, and deep indigo blue enhances the graphic clarity of the design while underscoring the textile’s tribal origins. Originally woven as a tent textile, this kilim served both decorative and functional purposes within the Shahsavan nomadic tradition.
