10 x 13 ft Oversized Rug Ersari Tribal Turkoman Hand Knotted Semi Antique Carpet
Located in Lohr, Bavaria, DE
Large oversized tribal rug Afghan Ersari Turkoman or Turkmen rug - "one of a kind" decorative tribal Art. Ersari Rugs: Timeless Handcrafted Treasures from Central Asia Ersari rugs are iconic pieces of art, handwoven by the skilled artisans of the Ersari Turkoman tribes in Turkmenistan. Known for their exceptional craftsmanship and deep cultural significance, these rugs bring a touch of history, tradition, and vibrant color to any space. With their striking designs and durable quality, Ersari rugs are a perfect blend of artistry and functionality, making them a highly sought-after choice for rug collectors and interior design enthusiasts alike. Crafted with Tradition: Materials & Techniques Ersari rugs are made from the finest wool sourced from sheep grazing in the vast, rugged landscapes of Central Asia. The wool is carefully spun and dyed using natural, plant-based dyes, resulting in rich, earthy tones that remain vibrant over time. Many Ersari rugs also incorporate cotton to enhance their strength and longevity. The knots used in Ersari rugs are tight and intricate, a hallmark of their craftsmanship, making each piece not only a functional floor covering but also a durable and long-lasting work of art. Vibrant Colors & Patterns Ersari rugs are renowned for their bold color palettes and striking geometric designs. The rugs typically feature shades of deep red, rust, burgundy, and earthy brown, combined with accents of blue, yellow, and cream. These colors are derived from natural dyes, giving the rugs their unique, rich hues. The design motifs commonly include medallions, repeating patterns, and symbolic "gul" motifs, which hold deep cultural meaning within the Ersari tribe. These rugs are a visual representation of the tribe’s nomadic heritage, and the color combinations often symbolize nature, life, and spiritual beliefs. The Ersari Tribe: A Rich Cultural Legacy The Ersari Turkoman tribe, known for its nomadic lifestyle, has been weaving rugs for centuries. These rugs not only serve as practical items in everyday life, such as floor coverings in tents or yurts, but also represent the artistic expression of the tribe. The Ersari people take pride in their tradition of rug-making, with each design reflecting the environment, culture, and beliefs of the tribe. The geometric and floral patterns found in Ersari rugs often tell stories of the tribe’s past, their connection to nature, and the symbolism behind the designs. Why Choose an Ersari Rug? Ersari rugs are more than just floor coverings; they are timeless works of art that embody the history and craftsmanship of the Ersari tribe. With their exceptional durability and stunning aesthetic, these rugs make an ideal addition to any home. Whether you're looking for a piece that tells a story, adds warmth and character to your space, or enhances your collection of traditional textiles, an Ersari rug offers both beauty and history in one unique piece. The Turkmen or Turkoman people are settling in villages in Afghanistan an Turkmenistan near the Persian border. Their origin is tribal nomadic, but most members of the tribes have settled in villages in the last decades. Typical for most Turkoman carpets is their geometric design made of wide borders and a repeating inner field with symbols called "Gul" The design of the Gul and the borders tell a lot, which tribe of Turkoman made the rug. The rug listed has 36 octagonal main Guls (eight edged) in 3 rows divided by smaller minor Guls. The golden / beige copper color is very unusual since most Turkoman rugs are made in a bright tomato red. This one has a wool with silk-like shine, a color best defined as very light copper combined with ivory and brown motives. Since tribal people usually have smaller portable looms, it is normal that they make small rugs. Most Turkmen rugs found are between 4 x 6 ft and 8 x 11 ft. For this reason, this 13 x 10 ft rug...

18 x 13 ft Palatial Rug in Style of Farahan Ziegler Hand-Knotted 550 x 400 cm
Located in Lohr, Bavaria, DE
Palatial Ziegler Mahal Rug – 545 x 396 cm (17.9 x 13 ft / 214 x 156 in) – Hand-knotted in Afghanistan Make a grand statement with this exceptional Ziegler Mahal rug, hand-knotted around the 1990 - 2000 in Afghanistan using traditional techniques and naturally dyed wool. With its impressive size of 545 x 396 cm (214 x 156 inches / 17.9 x 13 feet), this piece is ideal for spacious living rooms, formal dining areas, open-plan interiors, or hotel lobbies. The rug features a classic all-over Mahal design, known for its large-scale floral and palmette patterns, seamlessly arranged in a symmetrical layout. The style, often referred to as Ziegler Mahal, has its roots in the Anglo-Persian company Ziegler & Co., which produced rugs in Persia during the late 19th century to suit European tastes. This piece is a modern continuation of that tradition, combining refined artistry with everyday usability. The color palette is warm and harmonious, featuring: Pantone 7608 C – Soft rose red (motifs and accents) Pantone 7501 C – Sand beige (field background) Pantone 7504 C – Wheat brown (secondary pattern elements) Pantone 7530 C – Warm stone grey (outlines and detailing) Pantone 1815 C – Deep garnet red (borders and contrast) Crafted with a wool pile of high quality, the rug remains in very good condition, with strong colors, tight knots, and a well-preserved structure. Its timeless elegance and muted sophistication make it suitable for both classic interiors with antique furniture and modern spaces with minimalist design. Whether under a dining table, anchoring a seating area, or defining an open room, this rug brings warmth, richness, and cultural depth. Key Features: Dimensions: 545 x 396 cm (214 x 156 in / 17.9 x 13 ft) Design: All-over Mahal (Ziegler Mahal style) Origin: Hand-knotted in Afghanistan Material: 100% wool pile, dyed with natural pigments Era: Circa 1990 - 2000 Condition: Very good Color palette: Rose red, beige, brown, grey, garnet (see Pantone codes above) Style match: Perfect for traditional, transitional, or modern interiors Suggested use: Living rooms, dining rooms, great rooms, lounges, offices, hotel suites Ziegler Sultanabad carpets have their origins in ancient Persia. It was named after the Anglo-Swiss company Ziegler & Co. based in Manchester. From the mid-1880s it was a producer and dealer in carpets from Persia and had production facilities in the Azerbaijan / Tabriz region, Sarough Sultanabad (today Arak) and Mahal. In contrast to the more colorful rugs of earlier eras, Ziegler rugs were made in softer and often lighter tones. The knot density was medium fine, the wool quality very good. Today, original Ziegler carpets are sought-after. Ziegler carpets are currently being knotted in Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India and are sold under the following names: Ziegler Carpet, Ziegler Farahan, Ziegler Mahal and Ziegler Ariana. The designs are often based on the originals, the colors are often reduced to a few shades within a carpet. This creates rugs with calm elegance, which refine a room in a modern, upscale furnishing style, ideal as a decorative but calm design element. In addition to designs from Farahan, Mahal, Sultanabad, Oushak and Khotan motifs are also used in modern Ziegler carpets. High-quality new sheep's wool is used as the base material for the wear layer. This comes from the region (Ghanzi wool) as well as from New Zealand. The color pigments are of natural origin (vegetable colors) in higher-quality qualities. Typical colors of Ziegler carpets are beige, rut, grey, blue, black and green. A special wash gives the carpets a light vintage look and a subtle sheen. Coarser and cheaper Ziegler carpets are often referred to as Chobi Ziegler carpets, fine and finest Ziegler carpets as Ariana or Aryana / Ariana Ziegler carpets. Ziegler carpets are knotted in many formats. In Europe, the most common are 180 x 120 cm or 6 x 4 ft, 200 x 150 cm or 7 x 5 ft, 240 x 300 cm or 8 x 10 ft, 300 x 200 cm or 10 x 7 ft, 360 x 270 cm. or 12 x 9 ft Our customers in the USA and Great Britain are more often looking for oversized in 15 x 12 ft...

Antique and Vintage Persian Rugs for Sale on 1stDibs: Persian Tribal Rugs, Handmade Silk Persian Rugs and More

Make a bold statement in a living room or bedroom by incorporating vintage Persian rugs in your home decor.

A Persian carpet lends an aura of prestige to any room, even today. The fascination with Persian rugs dates at least as far back as the 4th century B.C., when historian Xenophon referred to the “soft rugs on which the Persians sit.” For centuries, Iran (modern-day Persia) has been known for the craftsmanship, intricate patterns and artistry of its carpets, which have found their way into households and museums around the world.

Although they have many imitators, real Persian rugs are made only in Iran and are easily recognized by their vibrant colors and elegant patterns.

Traditional, or antique, Persian rugs are what most people identify as “authentic.” Hand-made, they are very durable and, if properly cared for, can be passed down from generation to generation. Modern Persians, on the other hand, are often machine-made. Today’s carpets, Iranian or otherwise, can’t possibly match the level of craftsmanship that prevailed centuries ago, so historical Persian carpets will always be admired and highly valued.

Although the machine-aided production process is much faster and cheaper, the resulting rugs typically do not have the same quality or lifespan as handwoven ones, so traditional options are considered better investments.

To distinguish between the two, look for imperfections. Because traditional Persian rugs are handwoven, you will likely see small flaws on the front and back. With a machine-made imitation, on the other hand, you will probably not find stitching glitches, and the back will have a mesh or plastic covering.

Antique rugs are handmade from the finest materials, including wool, silk or cotton — never synthetic fibers. The fibers used in antique rugs are colored using natural dyes derived from insects and plants and woven into bold designs that reflect Iran’s culture and history. Since Persian tribes traditionally raised and herded sheep, wool was the most common material. The fiber has many advantages: It is fire-resistant and dries much more quickly than cotton. Also, because of its natural elasticity, it is more durable than cotton or silk. Regarded as works of art, Persian rugs can take months or years to complete.

The different types of Persian rugs are named for the cities, villages and regions where they’re made. Kashan rugs, for example, woven in the north-central Iranian city of Kashan, are considered among the finest city rugs, distinguished by curvilinear motifs like palmettos, leaves and arabesques. Nains have high knot counts, an indication of high quality, and generally employ pink, blue and ivory hues, while Tabriz rugs — created by weavers in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabrīz (or Tabriz) — mostly have floral and garden patterns.

When shopping for vintage Persian rugs, you'll want to consider color, size and more — for a history of these rugs and tips on how to style yours, visit our guide to these woven creations today.

Find Tabriz rugs, handmade silk Persian rugs, Persian tribal rugs and other antique and vintage rugs from the world's best furniture dealers on 1stDibs.
