About the Item

This Persian Mahan Kermanshah carpet created circa 1880 consists of a hand-knotted wool pile, cotton warp and threads, and natural vegetable dyes. Made in Mahan, Kerman province, the weavers of this carpet were followers of Sufi master Shah Neymatallah Ali. Their devotion to their spirituality is shown through their weaving, as seen in the carpet's design. The medallion exhibits eight points, representing the eight dimensions; four in the physical realm and four in the metaphysical realm. In the border one can see Sufi dancers, as dance and music were an integral part of their spiritual teachings. This carpet is of exceptional fineness and technical construction, using a triple versus a double weft to make the carpet both more flexible and impervious to dirt. The style and coloration is unique to this time period between the 1850s and 1890s, with gorgeous blue, red, pink, cream, green and navy tones balanced throughout the piece. The size is 11' x 16'6", and it is in excellent antique condition. Key features: - Major size presence: At 11′ × 17′, this is a statement-scale carpet that defines living or dining areas. - Antique provenance craft: Late 19th-century Persian origin (Mahan, Kerman), hand-knotted with cotton warps and wefts, and wool pile. The use of natural vegetable dyes gives depth and maturity to the colors. - Distinctive motif symbolism: The eight-point medallion and Sufi dancer border make this more than a decorative object—it’s a cultural artifact with narrative. - Design flexibility: The soft yet layered palette allows this rug to work beautifully in minimalist white-box settings, classic heritage homes, or modern interiors needing a rich textile layer. - Collector appeal: This piece marries museum-quality craftsmanship with practical scale and versatility. - Origin: Mahan, Kerman Province, Iran - Materials Technique: Hand-knotted wool pile, cotton warp weft, organic vegetable dyes - Condition: Excellent for its age — wear consistent with use; we ensure careful conservation and presentation. Orley Shabahang takes pride in selecting and curating the finest vintage and antique carpets, ensuring that the preservation of this ancient art form will endure for generations to come.
