Since Shah Abbas 1 (1587-1629) established looms within the Imperial palace to weave exceptional carpets this central Persian town has been well-known for the quality and style of its output. The town today with a population of over 400,000 is the heart of the country and was chosen by several ruling dynasties as the center of their Empire.
