About the Item

This antique, circa 1910, Persian Malayer rug has a tobacco-brown field with an overall design of buff-brown angular floral and leafy vine with stylized animal figures, in a broad buff-brown border of mole-brown and sandy-brown angular linked stylized vine between buff-brown angular boteh and barber-pole stripes, outer ivory and buff-brown zig-zag stripe. Malayer rugs, originating from the town of Malayer in northwest Iran, are prized for their intricate designs, high quality, and unique character. Known for their fine craftsmanship, these rugs typically feature floral or geometric patterns that are both elaborate and balanced, often in earthy, rich tones of red, blue, ivory, and brown. Malayer weavers frequently use the "Herati" motif—a diamond-centered pattern with curling leaves and fish-like forms—as well as boteh (paisley) and garden motifs. Unlike mass-produced rugs, Malayer pieces are usually handcrafted by skilled artisans, resulting in slight variations that add to their individuality and charm. Their dense weaving and use of high-quality wool ensure durability, making them highly sought after by collectors and interior designers.
