About the Item

The geographical region of Northwest Persia with its’ cities and villages was at the forefront of the large-scale export of rugs and carpets in the late 19th century. The merchants of Tabriz, a large city that is the capital of Persian Azerbaijan, are credited with the successful promotion of the carpet industry to the west. Hamadan is 6,000 feet above sea level and is a major production center and shipping market for primarily scatter rugs and runners. Many of the weavings from the roughly 600 small villages surrounding this commercial center are marketed and sold to the west from this city. These rugs utilize excellent quality wool and have a distinctive weave with a single-weft thread between each row of knots. The rug production in the actual town of Hamadan began in the early 20th century, but weaving from the surrounding villages, many of which are primarily inhabited by Kurds, has existed for centuries. Bibikabad rugs hail from western Persia, in the village of Bibi Kabad within the Hamadan region. Bibi Kabad means “the village of grandmother.” The name itself reflects the importance of cultural heritage to the creation of the rug, and this importance is evident in the composition and artistry of each rug. This rug has a central medallion on an indigo field flanked by complementary spandrels within an ivory palmette and vine border. 6' 4" x 4' 4" .
