About the Item

The city of Isfahan was the capital of Persia during the Safavid period in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. It is the source of many of the magnificent court carpets of that period that can currently be found in museum collections. This production center suffered after the Afghan invasion in 1722 and lay relatively dormant until the early 20th century. Prayer rugs have directional patterns that are pointed towards the holy city of Mecca during meditation. These rugs provide the worshipper with a clean area from which to pray, acting as a barrier from an impure ground surface below. The mihrab or niche is the main element of prayer rugs, with the shapes and sizes varying according to the weaving center. This example has a flowering vase flanked by animals at the base of the field beneath a curved arch. 6' 7" x 4' 7".
