About the Item
The Arak province in northern Persia has produced the greatest number of large carpets of any other Persian province. Named for the plain of Fereghan, an area of roughly 1200 square miles to the northeast of Arak, Fereghan rugs and carpets often have full field decorations in classical repeat patterns such as the Herati, Mina Khani, Gol Hennae, and Moustafi. The village of Sarouk in the Arak province is known for producing finely woven rugs and carpets. Beginning in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, a group of rugs blending floral, curvilinear patterns with intricate weaves and natural dyes was produced here, and these rugs were classified as Sarouk Fereghan rugs. This example has a central stepped medallion on a rose field within a charcoal meandering vine border. 4' 10" x 3' 3" .
