Made with hand-knotted wool circa 1890-1900, this 7x11 antique Persian rug is an outstanding turn-of-the-century Kerman Lavar rug, and an especially grand example of the "Mille Fleurs" design—a rich and regal collectible piece among the most iconic new curations from Rug
Kilim’s rare classics.
On the Design:
The field presents a most unusual, fabulous interpretation of the aforementioned Mille Fleurs floral pattern—sometimes overlapping with the 'garden carpet' tradition of a similar, rare intricacy—in vwhich varied floral compartments create a mesmerizing patchwork of botanical abundance against a subtly modulated ground. Admirers of the craft will appreciate the finesse with which each garden section is designed—some featuring latticed flower heads, others displaying naturalistic blooms, all executed with the fine weave that made Lavar's production distinctive among Kerman workshops of the highest caliber. The palette demonstrates particular sophistication in its use of rose, sage, and aubergine tones in its impressive variety of colors, also achieved through the superior dyeing techniques for which the Lavar district was renowned.
