This 8x13 antique Persian rug of Khorassan provenance is a rich and exciting new curation from Rug
Kilim’s collection of important classics—a particularly unique find among works of a celebrated weaving tradition, made with hand-knotted wool circa 1910-1920.
On the Design:
A play of beige-brown, camel, and navy blue tones underscores an elaborate series of floral patterns in the borders and field alike—an intricate, finely detailed marriage of medallion and all over style. Admirers of the craft may recognize an unexpected take on medallions and traditional palmettes in the particular, almost architectural look of those in the field, among the subtleties in this work’s many beauties. Keen eyes for detail may further note accents of midnight blue in the overall styling of the patterns, and admire both the richness of the dye at work in this piece as well as the skillful sense of depth it achieves. There’s quite a smart use of the humble palette that plays beautifully and naturally with the sharp drawing and fine execution at work here—quintessential of the quality revered in Khorassan carpets of its large size and scale, and all-the-more special to find in such a subtly distinct piece for the tradition.
