Large antique size Khorassan Persian rug, country of origin, Persia, date circa 1920. Size: 11 ft 10 in x 17 ft (3.61 m x 5.18 m)
This splendid antique Oriental carpet from Khorassan in Persia was woven in the 1920’s at one of the major carpet producing centers of the world. Antique Persian Khorassan carpets are known for having multiple layers of detail, each of which reveals itself as the viewer moves closer. This highly decorative carpet has a larger pattern that is apparent from a distance, but when you move in close, a more subtle and delicate design emerges from the background.
The pallet of this antique Persian rug is soft, using muted pastels against a midnight blue background. This gives it a feeling of strolling through moon kissed gardens in the palace courtyard. The colors of the floral patterns, within this soft large size rug, against the midnight sky are more subdued, much as the moonlight transforms everything with its opalescent glow.
The directional symmetry of the antique Khorassan Persian rug gives it balance and that compliments the artist’s use of color and design. The Khorassan artists reflected the beauty around them in the antique rugs that they created. The world of these great Persian rug weavers was a world filled with lush gardens with cool reflecting pools scattered throughout. This love of their world comes out in carpets such as this one that pays homage to it.
