About the Item

The Kurds are a relatively autonomous group whose population is concentrated primarily in Turkey, Iraq, and Persia (Iran). They are recognized as being prolific weavers who have produced rugs in a variety of patterns and weaves. Their lifestyles vary, being either nomadic, semi-nomadic (populating small villages), or sedentary by living in urban areas. Persian Kurdistan is a mountainous region to the north of Hamadan in Persia, south of Azerbaijan. This area is recognized as having excellent wool quality, with their weavings utilizing a wide range of saturated dyes in their designs. Kurdish weavers had a high level of control over how their patterns were articulated, resulting in the whimsical character that is often found in their bags, rugs, and runners. This long rug has a central ivory pole medallion amongst rosettes and leaves on a madder field within an ivory serrated leaf and calyx border. 8' 0" x 4' 4"
