About the Item

The Kurds are a relatively autonomous group whose population is concentrated primarily in Turkey, Iraq, and Persia (Iran). They are recognized as being prolific weavers who have produced rugs in a variety of patterns and weaves. Their lifestyles vary, being either nomadic, semi-nomadic (populating small villages), or sedentary by living in urban areas. Persian Kurdistan is a mountainous region to the north of Hamadan and south of Azerbaijan. This area is recognized as having excellent wool quality, with its’ weavings utilizing a wide range of natural saturated dyes in their designs. In the town of Bidjar and its’ surrounding villages, a cottage industry existed where materials and designs could easily be purchased in shops, with the actual manufacturing to be completed on looms set up in the weaver's private residence. The rugs produced here are known for being hard-wearing and unpliable due to their construction. In between each row of knots is a tightly packed thick weft thread supplemented by a thinner sinuous thread. Kurdish weavers had a high level of control over how their patterns were articulated, resulting in the whimsical character that is often found in their bags, rugs, and runners. This carpet has a free-flowing interpretation of the traditional Herati pattern on an indigo field within an ivory floral vinery border. 7' 4" x 4' 3".
